Pinball Coin

Any advice on purchasing a PInball machine?

I am looking to purchase a used (1990's?) pinball machine (coin-op). I know about Ballys and Williams, is Stern a good brand? What types of things should I be aware of? I'm going to look around town a bit today. Thanks for any advice.

First off, in mid 1988, Bally was bought by Williams. So Bally and Williams machines from the 1990s are going to be identical in terms of reliability, as they were designed and built by the same people on the same assembly lines from the same parts.

Stern is a good brand; in fact, they're the ONLY brand that is still in business today (Williams quit the pinball business in 1999).

Contrary to the other answer you've received so far, a coin-op pinball machine does not break down frequently. Don't forget that the whole point of a pinball machine is to make money for the person that owns it, and a broken machine doesn't make much money. They are well designed, and constructed to take a lot of abuse. That being said, of course they're not indestructible, but if you buy a machine in good condition, it should only need occasional minor maintenance to run virtually forever in your home.

If tinkering with a complex electronic & mechanical device weighing 300 pounds is a scary concept to you, then I recommend that you shop around to find a dealer that will stand behind any machine that they sell you. Certainly for at least 30 days, and ideally 90 days or longer. You'll pay more than for a machine with no guarantee, but the extra cost will save you a lot of headaches.
