Not Working

windows update not working?

my windows update is not working. I don't know why but it has been like this for a long time, it keeps popping up and saying this. I tried manually checking for updates but it says " Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running" Whys is that ? Why the hell doesn't it work ? How can i fix this ? I would appreciate all help. Thank you.
