Monitor Flyback
Monitor Flyback

what does a flyback transformer do?
does it improve the quality of the television so that it can be a steady picture? because i want to get the television as steady, clear and sharp as those arcade monitors are.
(not as if you pause the VCR on the tv all jittery) . . i want it steady
The flyback transformer does two jobs:
It acts like a big inductor that is in series with the yoke coils and is used to generate a high reverse voltage across the coils which in turn creates a high rate of change of current which drags the electron beam back to the left side of the screen quickly.
It also acts as a high voltage transformer, generating 10-15 kV for black and white screens and 20-30 kV for colour screens. There is typically a rectifier diode and capacitor in the body of the transformer to give a DC high voltage output. Also there is typically a high voltage resistor that is used to produce focus (7 kV) and G2 (<1kV).
There is already a flyback transformer in your CRT monitor. It would not work without one.
Do not mess with this circuit. It has been very specifically designed. If you do not know what a flyback transformer is then you are not qualified to work on these circuits. 25 kV at a couple of joules of energy is more than enough to kill you.
