I have just acquired a Mitsubishi Pajero import and need some help please?

It is japanese circa 1989 and I do not have a manual. It's been running fine for the last couple of months, but during the last week a light has come on the dashboard. It's the light you have on when the handbrake's on (!) but it just stays on. I assume it's some sort of warning, but does anyone know what it's warning me of?

First of all, there are both factory owners manuals as well as factory service manuals available on ebay for much less than what you can buy them from a dealer/mitsubishi.

Alternatively there's also a couple of online sites where you can download pdf copies of the US 1989 Montero (does not have a lockup torque converter) Factory Service Manual. Unfortunately this does not include any Turbo Diesel engine information however the rest of the vehicle will be there.

As for your dashbord light, it's most likely your front pads being used up requiring more fluid in the brake lines which makes the fluid level in the reservoir go low. This sets off a sensor in the reservoir. You fix the problem by filling your brake fluid to the upper line which IIRC is about 1cm from the very top of the reservoir.

Be extremely careful if you spill the fluid. It WILL EAT through your PAINT right down to bare metal!!

Also, assuming the rear brake proportioning adjustment hasn't been adjusted since new, it probably needs adjusting and you probably aren't using full rear braking power as you should. Be sure you check into that.

Also, if it's an automatic transmission, be sure you have the fluid flushed (not just drained and refilled). When they do this, ensure they use either Mitsu Fluid or 100% mitsu compatible fluid. If they don't you stand a great risk of destroying your transmission which is VERY EXPENSIVE to rebuild. I know you didn't ask about this but I figured I'd chime in with it anyways.

Last but not least if you happen to be in N. America, be sure to also check out 4x4wire.com's mitsu technical forums for information and technical resources for your Pajero.

HTH.
