Where did all these boy names come from?
I'm english and am always sort of amused/perplexed whenever I hear these american names:
Trip
Skip
Chip
Bud
Buzz
Rip
Ruff
Dirk
Buck
Trent
Buster
Hunter
I have collected these from certain films and decided to ask about them. They just all seem to be a combination of random words pressed through the name sieve and somehow got through. When did people start naming their children these, and what is good about them that I'm missing?
Almost all of these are nicknames and many of them are used of adults in a patronizing way.
Trip: rarely used, but I've heard it as a nickname for Patrick
Skip: comes from the nautical term "Skipper"; for some reason often given as a nickname in childhood. As far as I can tell it isn't a nickname for a particular name. Rarely if ever used as a real name.
Chip: A childhood nickname, mainly for Charles.
Bud: Technically a nickname for the rarely used name "Buddy". Much more often used as a term (friendly and unfriendly) that essentially means "pal" or "mate". I've heard of it used once as a nickname for Robert but I don't know if that's normal.
Buzz: Related to the Old Testament name Buz. I believe it had moderate popularity in the US in the mid-late 20th century because of the astronaut "Buzz" Aldrin (it was his childhood nickname that continued into adulthood). Rarely heard now in the US.
Rip: I'm an American and I've never heard of this except as the name of the actor Rip Torn. Rip is his nickname.
Ruff: Never heard this one either.
Dirk: Short form of the Dutch/German name Diederick. I've heard it as a nickname for Derek.
Buck: Probably famous because of the sci-fi show "Buck Rodgers". Never heard it in real life.
Trent: An English place name.
Buster: Another childhood term, kind of like "twerp". It originally comes from a term denoting a person who broke things, from the word bust. There was a silent movie star named Buster Keaton, so that might account for American usage, though I've never heard it as a name.
Hunter: Why this is popular in the US I don't know...
Out of all of these names that only ones I've ever actually heard as given names in real life (and not on actors) are Trent and Hunter. The rest are all childhood or idiomatic terms.
You aren't missing anything "good" about them. I'm an American and I think that they would all make awful given names.
