most PCB layout software allows the user to switch between english and metric units. I used a 0.05" grid when I lay out PCBs. But I often need to switch to metric for parts that have nice round metric dimensions.

Many components are based on english units, and many others are based on metric units. And it is common to have parts of both types in a design. So the library of components typically need to translate between the two measurments.
